Lowland gorillas are large, powerful primates native to the dense forests of central Africa. There are two subspecies: the western lowland gorilla, which is more commonly found in zoos, and the eastern lowland gorilla. These gorillas are primarily herbivorous, feeding on fruits, leaves, and stems, but they may occasionally consume insects. Known for their social structure, lowland gorillas live in groups led by a dominant silverback male who protects and leads the troop. Despite their strength and size, they are generally peaceful and spend much of their time foraging and resting.
